The needle sampler (vacuum pin sampler) is mounted on the head of a measuring lance and connected to a vacuum unit. When the sampler is immersed in molten steel, the vacuum draws metal into a thin quartz pin tube that solidifies almost instantly, giving a pin sample suitable for hydrogen and gas analysis.
